Meet Elena, Alex’s mom! The mom every queer person needs. Alex’s dad isn’t here – for a quick refresher, his parents are divorced (page 154), and his dad isn’t supportive (page 55 is when Alex first mentions him, and he elaborates on page 155). His maternal grandparents aren’t here either – Alex isn’t out to them yet (page 159).

This is a smaller celebration as a result, but thankfully everyone here is supportive of one another. Sometimes it’s not about the number of people there but celebrating with those who understand you.

Jessica: Just that Mom always cooks so much. I hope you’re hungry!
Alex: Hey Mami, we’re here!
Jessica: We brought Kaz!
Elena: Welcome! Wonderful to finally meet you, Kaz!
Kaz: You too, Ms. Rossi.
Elena: Oh, it’s Dr. Alvarez, but that’s what my students call me.
Kaz: Oh! I’m sorry.
Elena: Don’t be. You can call me Elena.
Alex didn’t tell me much, but I know things are hard with your family, honey.
If you ever need another mom, I’m here for you.
Alex: Let me put down these presents then Jess and I can help in the kitchen.
Elena: Thank goodness, mijo, I’m so behind on dinner…
Alex: Can I grab you a drink, babe?
Kaz: No thanks, need any help?
Alex: Nah, feel free to relax with Ren. Jess and I got this. You’re our guests.
